Sligo Rovers vs Drogheda United
Ireland Premier Division
Date: Saturday, 15th July 2017
Kick off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: The Showgrounds.
Sligo Rovers couldn’t manage to build on their impressive win over Shamrock Rovers at the start of July, falling straight back into winless ways, as they were thrashed 4-0 at Derry City last weekend.
This pushes them down to 9th in the League of Ireland Premier Division, with them sitting just a point above the relegation zone and looking troubled. This is the perfect opportunity for them to bounce back though.
The hosts come face to face with a Drogheda United side who are in terrible shape. They were always expected to struggle this season, and whilst they still have every chance of avoiding the drop, their recent form suggests that they will be returning to the second flight very soon.
The visitors lost 5-0 against Ipswich in a friendly last weekend, and in the Premier Division they have lost four games in a row. Their last win came all the way back in April, with them drawing five and losing six of their 11 games since then.
The main issue is their complete inability to find the back of the net. Drogheda United have scored just 14 times this season and have failed to get on the scoresheet in eight of their last nine league matches. They are only three points from safety, but they need to find their shooting boots very soon.
Away from home they have lost seven of their ten league matches this season and failed to score in half of them. Sligo Rovers have kept a clean sheet in four of their last seven home games as well, and whilst they aren’t the highest scoring side themselves, they will definitely feel like they can put one or two past Drogheda United.
This opens up some massive value for us. A home win looks very likely given Drogheda United’s form, and considering both teams have averaged one goal or less per game this season and the visitors have failed to score in eight of their last nine, odds of 11/4 for a Sligo Rovers Win and Under 2.5 Goals look great value. We’re going for this along with a 1-0 correct score predictions at 6/1.
Sligo Rovers
The hosts dropped down to the ninth position after a poor run during which they claimed only a single win in nine matches.
The new manager Gerard Lytlle could likely lose his job in case of a yet another failure in the match of a great importance for both him (as a head coach=) and the team who would seriously compromise their elite class status with a potential defeat.
Drogheda United
Seeing Pete Mahon still on Drogheda’s bench is kind of a miracle since the team scored no more than a single goal in last nine matches.
The Drogs are still only three points away from the safe zone in spite of a horrendous series of results, but there are just no signs of the light at the end of the tunnel for them according to the most recent displays.
Sligo Rovers vs Drogheda United: Head to head
The hosts have been much more successful in the history of head to head encounters wining 24 and losing only 12 meetings with Drogheda.
The match from the first part of the season at Hunky Dorys Park ended without a winner as the teams shared a point by playing a 1-1 draw in late-April.
Sligo Rovers vs Drogheda United: Prediction
The match with Drogheda will be a terrific opportunity for Kieran Sadlier (who has seven goals to his name so far in the season) to bring back the form he had at the start of the campaign.
We doubt the hosts will fail to take advantage of a nice chance to make this a turning point of the season and we are going to back them to pick up the victory at 4/7 odds.
