Covering a number like this will not be easy for Gilles Simon, but this is a good match for him in the past and there have been enough solid grass games from French players to trust him here. It was not a position that always made me comfortable, especially with the many matches Simon asked to discuss, but there was enough for me to support him in this place.
The Frenchman was Runner Up at Queens Club in building up to Wimbledon, while he also reached the Quarter Final at Eastbourne to support that performance in London. There is no doubt that it is difficult to really feel comfortable supporting someone to cover up a defect like this when you consider the struggle Gilles Simon can have on his service, but he has held 81% of grass service games in 2019.
That number is not one that will cause too much walking in at Wimbledon, but Simon has broken 22% of the game back to support it. Gilles Simon was a comfortable winner in the First Round when he took revenge on Salvotore Caruso, the player who beat Simon at the French Open a few weeks ago.
Now he faces American Tennys Sandgren who doesn't have a lot of grass court pedigree to talk about and who has struggled to reach the top of his breakthrough on the Tour at the Australian Open eighteen months ago. The American was 3-1 on the grass in 2019, but she served only 78% of her playing service before the First Round victory over Yasutaka Uchiyama and that included a big loss for Gilles Simon.
The two players have met twice before and that includes their match at Eastbourne last week. Gilles Simon only holds 78% of his service games at those matches, but he is very comfortable returning Tennys Sandgren's service with this American player who only holds 42% of his own service games.
Last week, Gilles Simon had a number that was slightly superior in service and returns in their match on the grass and I think he could cover up what appeared to be a very large number in the face of many things. I would be surprised if there were not a few swings in momentum in a set of tennis, but Gilles Simon had to secure a set with some service breaks considering how he had matched Tennys Sandgren.
If a Frenchman can do that, I think he will be in a position to cover this number and I will support him to do that.
