World number seven Elina Svitolina made it through a difficult test to defeat Maria Sakkari of Greece, but needed a deciding set in the third round.
Svitolina has beaten her 16 opponents Petra Martic three times and especially at the Grand Slam twice with two Roland-Garros wins but this will be their first meeting on clay.
Ukrainian number one Svitolina has lost five of her last ten matches, including her first match in Eastbourne to double partner Petra Martic Alize Cornet.
