AC Milan vs Atalanta: Preview
After seeing their unbeaten run snapped, Milan will hope to rebound as they take on a potentially tricky Atalanta side at the Stadio San Siro on Saturday evening.
Due to their bad showings over the past few seasons, the Rossoneri were really not expected to be mixing it up among the top three for a Champions League berth. However, in the absence of expectations, Vincenzo Montella’s side have been quite solid and as such, find themselves in third place. Milan were on a pretty good unbeaten run – with their last defeat taking place on September 11th against Udinese – until facing off against Roma this past Monday.
Prior to the game, both the Diavolo and the Giallorossi were locked neck-and-neck in a race for second spot as they were tied on 32 points. Roma, however, were able to snap that unbeaten streak – whilst keeping their 100 per cent home record intact – after grinding out a tough 1-0 win. M’Baye Niang had a golden chance to put the team ahead after Milan earned a penalty, but just like in their prior game, stepped up and unfortunately missed.
That marked the second time that new striker Gianluca Lapadula won the spot-kick, but ultimately had to concede the taking duties to his French colleague. It goes without saying that should there be yet another penalty opportunity, it isn’t likely that Lapadula (if he wins it again) will want to hand over that chance to Niang for a third straight time.
Having suffered their first loss in three months, all eyes will be on how Milan reacts to that setback and get back on track. Their upcoming opponents, Atalanta, will want to do the same. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men had been in truly impressive form which saw them pick up a whopping 25 points in just nine games and go from relegation candidates to battling for a European football spot.
Nine games unbeaten had La Dea feeling pretty confident. That is, until they met Juventus and ended up losing for the first time in several months. The 3-1 defeat certainly impacted Gasperini’s largely young side, as they were rattled in their last home game. Udinese were the latest to do damage, meaning that Atalanta have lost two on the trot for the first time since the start of the season.
