Deportivo La Coruna vs Sevilla
Spanish La Liga 2016/17
Date: Saturday, 19th November 2016,
Kick-Off at 12:00 UK
Venue: Estadio Municipal de Riazor, La Coruna.
It does feel like a lifetime ago that Deportivo La Coruna were not just a regular name in the Champions League but one that could potentially win that competition. Nowadays they are just trying to maintain their place in the top flight in Spain and it is likely to be another season in which Deportivo La Coruna will be happy to remain a part of the elite in Spain.
They come into the latest round of fixtures in 16th place in the League table and they are only a point clear of the bottom three having finished 4 points clear of the relegation zone last season. The home form is going to be key for Deportivo La Coruna who have a 2-1-2 record here having scored and conceded 6 goals in those games.
Deportivo La Coruna have failed to win any of their last 4 League games, but they did earn draws with Valencia and Granada heading into the international break. The side have taken 4 points from their last couple of League games at home after Deportivo La Coruna suffered back to back home defeats.
Sevilla
This has been a really good start to the new season for Sevilla, but some of the momentum was broken in the final game before the international break. A 1-2 home loss to Barcelona has snapped some of the positives Sevilla had built up, but they can get back to winning ways this weekend before hosting Juventus in a big Champions League game next week.
The loss to Barcelona has sent Sevilla down to 5th place in the League table and they are now 6 points off the leaders Real Madrid. After failing to win an away League game through the whole of last season, Sevilla are still having some problems on their travels this year too as they have compiled a 1-3-1 away record.
Sevilla had been unbeaten in 7 games in all competitions and had won 6 of those games before the narrow defeat to Barcelona. The side had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon last time out away from home, but Sevilla had won at Leganes and Dinamo Zagreb prior to that result.
Head to Head
Both League games between these teams ended in the same 1-1 scoreline last season.
Prior to those results Sevilla had won 4 in a row against Deportivo including on back to back visits here.
Prediction
Sevilla are favourites to win this weekend at Deportivo La Coruna but their poor away form can't be discounted as they struggle to win games in the Spanish top flight on their travels. Even the win over Leganes came after losing a 0-2 lead and Sevilla also have this huge game with Juventus coming up that might see the players lose a bit of focus.
Playing in Deportivo La Coruna isn't easy and they have only lost 17 of their 42 home games since the beginning of the 2014/15 season when returning to the top flight. They don't score a lot of goals, but Deportivo don't concede a lot either and might take advantage if Sevilla are concentrating on the Champions League game they have next.
A 1-1 scoreline like last season can't be ruled out, but I am going to back the home team with a slight start on the Asian Handicap to avoid defeat at the least.
