Uruguay started the tourney with a two-game winning run before Ecuador defeated them in Matchday 3, 1-2, on the road. The team then went on a three-game unbeaten streak, which was snapped by a loss to Argentina, 0-1, in the seventh matchday.
With the Argentinians draw to Venezuela in the previous matchday, La Celeste grabbed first place in the current CONMEBOL table after a 4-0 romp over Paraguay also at their home stadium in Montevideo on Sep. 6, as per the Mirror.
Big names Luis Suárez of FC Barcelona and Edinson Cavani of Paris Saint-Germain led head coach Óscar Tabárez's squad in the lopsided victory with a combined three goals and two assists.
Cavani scored the first goal at the 18th minute off a brilliant Suárez cross before teammate Cristian Rodriguez doubled their lead at the 42nd.
Suárez then made it a 3-0 advantage at the break by scoring a penalty kick in the first half injury time.
Another Suárez to Cavani play gave the PSG striker his second goal of the match at the 54th, sealing the win for Los Charrúas.
Meanwhile, Venezuela pulled off a stunning 2-2 draw with tournament-favorites Argentina at the Estadio Metropolitano de Mérida also on Sep. 6, SB Nation reported.
Attacking midfielder Juanpi drew first blood at the 34th before teammate Josef Martinez made it a 2-0 lead with a strike at the 52nd minute.
Forward Lucas Pratto began the Argentine comeback attempt with a goal at the 58th. The visitors then finally found the equalizer at the 83rd with a shot from defender Nicolas Otamendi to salvage the draw.
