In our Faroe Islands v Portugal betting preview we look at the best possible betting tips between the two sides.
On Monday evening this week in Group B of the 2018 World Cup Qualification campaign we see Fernando Santos take his Portugal side on the trip to Torsvollur stadium in Torshavn to face Lars Olsen’s Faroe Islands. The other teams in Group B are Switzerland, Latvia, Hungary and Andorra. This one should be a comfortable away win for Portugal.
The home side Faroe Islands head into the visit of Portugal on the back of a busy few days which sees them play their second game in the space of the last three days. They’ve actually had a very solid start and find themselves sat in 2nd place in the table on 4 points after 1 win and a draw from their opening 2 fixtures. In their first match they welcomed Bernd Storck’s Hungary to Torsvollur and they managed to come away with a very solid point. Neither side managed to create many clear cut chances and had to settle for a goalless draw. In their 2014 World Cup Qualifiers they were placed into a group along with Republic of Ireland, Kazakhstan, Austria, Sweden and Germany. The Faroe Islands ended up coming bottom of the table managing just 1 points from their 11 fixtures. The only tie which they got a point in was in their home match with Kazakhstan which finished 1-1. They have never qualified for either of the World Cup or Euro’s and know they need a miracle if they are going to this time. However they have had a good start so who knows.
Their most recent game was on Friday evening when they travelled toSkonto Stadium in Riga to face Marians Pahars’ Latvia in the second round of fixtures for Group B of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. It was the perfect start for the Faroe Islands when they took the lead in the 19th minute through Sonni Nattestad who helped a shot on its way into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. They secured the win with their second with 20 minutes to play thanks to Joan Edmundsson who was unmarked in the box and chipped a delightful dink over the keeper and into the net to claim their first win of the campaign.
The away side Portugal go into the trip to the Faroe Islands also on the back of a busy week which sees them play their second game in the space of the last three days. They currently find themselves sat in 3rd place in the table on 3 points after one win and one defeat from their opening 2 fixtures. In their first match they made the trip to St. Jakob-Park in Basel to face Vladimir Petković’s Switzerland side. They found themselves behind in the 24th minute when Breel Embolo reacted quickly to head home after the keeper could only parry the ball into his path from a free kick. Their lead was doubled just 6 minutes later thanks to Admir Mehmedi rounded off a brilliant counter attacking move with a fantastic finish into the top right corner. That ended up being the only goal of the tie as Portugal started their campaign off in the worst possible way. Portugal have never had much success in World Cups, with the furthest they’ve reached being the semi-final and then ending up in the third/fourth play off tie. In the last World Cup in Brazil, they didn’t manage to make it out of a group including Germany, United States and Ghana. However they did win Euro 2016 so they will be going into this tournament full of confidence.
Their most recent game was on Friday night when they welcomed Koldo Álvarez’s Andorra to Estadio Municipal in Aveiro in the second round of fixtures for Group B of the 2018 World Cup. It was total domination from minute 1 to minute 90 when Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the first 4 minutes of the tie to put it to bed immediately. The third came just before half time when Joao Cancelo made it 3 and then it was 4 just after the break when Ronaldo collected his hat-trick. He got his fourth and Pourtgals fifth on 68 minutes and then Andre Silva rounded it off with their sixth with just four minutes to play. A very convincing win.
Faroe Islands vs Portugal: Head to Head Statistics
Both teams have only met once which was an international friendly in 2008, Portugal defeated Faroe Islands 5-0 in the game. This will be their second game in history and their first competitive game ever played between them.
Faroe Islands vs Portugal: Prediction
Its no doubt that Portugal have the upper hand in this game despite playing on away soil. Portugal have been on a superb form, having just 1 dent in their last 5 game which was a defeat to Switzerland. They have won 4 of their last 5 games and have kept clean sheets in 4 of their last 5 games.
Since after their success in the European Championship, Portugal have won 2 of the 3 games played so far and lost 1. They have scored a total of 11 goals in their last 3 games.
Faroe Islands haven’t been poor, they have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 2 of their last 5 games. They have kept clean sheets in their last 2 games and showed signs of improvement in their last win over Latvia.
I expect Portugal to win the game in a high tone, but i also expect the home team to score at least a goal in the game.
