It has been a chaotic summer for Lazio and confidence is rock bottom going into the cauldron of Atalanta’s Stadio Azzurri d’Italia.
Even by their usual standards, the last three months have been truly bizarre at the Aquile camp. Stefano Pioli was sacked in April, caretaker manager Simone Inzaghi told he was no longer required and then recalled when Marcelo Bielsa resigned two days after his contract was announced.
Antonio Candreva, Miroslav Klose and Edson Braafheid have left, but Ciro Immobile will be aiming to revitalise his career yet again.
Atalanta have a new Coach at the helm, ex-Genoa and Inter man
Gian Piero Gasperini, so that means all-attack football and his beloved 3-4-3 system. Alberto Paloschi now leads the trident after his very short stint at Swansea City, flanked by Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez and Marco D’Alessandro.
This ought to be a fascinating encounter and one for the neutrals too, because both sides have very quick strike forces and shoddy defensive lines. It’ll be a breeze to watch Keita Balde Diao and Ricardo Kishna on one side, D’Alessandro and Gomez on the other, running at their opponents full throttle. Jordan Lukaku may well have a tricky Serie A debut at left-back for Lazio.
Felipe Anderson would add to that list of pacey strikers, but he is on international duty with Brazil at the Rio Olympics.
Atalanta have a strong recent record against Lazio, winning three and drawing one of their last six meetings.
Keep an eye on: Keita Balde Diao (Lazio) – All six members of the two trident attacks are worth watching in this game, but Keita has been on fine form this summer after an initial row over wages and he’ll have a field day on his left against Atalanta’s Andrea Conti.
On the other wing, Ricardo Kishna will be kept far busier by the marauding runs of Papu Gomez.
Last season: Atalanta 2-1
Lazio
Stat fact: Alberto Paloschi has found the net three times in his last three meetings with Lazio.
Top tip: Both sides to score, as this has been the case in the last three editions of this fixture.
Atalanta (probable): Sportiello; Masiello, Toloi, Zukanovic; Conti, Kurtic, Kessie, Drame; D’Alessandro, Paloschi, Gomez
