Club Brugge vs FC Porto
UEFA Champions League – Group G
Date: Tuesday, 18th September, 2016,
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Jan Breydel Stadion, Brugge.
Club Brugge’s Champions League campaign hasn’t exactly gone to plan as of yet, and their domestic season isn’t in the best shape either. Their first group match saw them lose 3-0 to European newcomers Leicester, and they followed that with a crushing 4-0 defeat at Copenhagen to make it zero points and zero goals from their opening two matches.
Their 1-0 defeat to Sporting Charleroi on Friday made it five defeats, one draw, and four wins in their last ten outings in all competitions and puts them down in 4th position in the Belgian Pro League.
Of course, Club Brugge can blame some of their troubles on injuries. They have a host of players out for this clash, including this season’s top scorer Jose Izquierdo and last season’s top scorer Abdoulaye Diaby. Ruud Vormer, Anthony Limombe, and Felipe Gedoz are all suffering from a bout of the flu as well, so they are a severely depleted side at the moment. Their main threat will be Jelle Vossen, but apart from him they are currently struggling for goals.
Porto will be happy that their main injury problem is back in action now. Andre Silva had been out for a while with injury but has come back in fine form. He has scored three goals in his last three league appearances and netted a hat trick for Portugal in their 6-0 hammering of Faroe Islands. For Porto he has scored six goals in the league and Champions League this season, so he’s certainly one to watch where goalscorers are concerned.
The Portuguese giants haven’t started the continental campaign in great shape though. They managed to get through a tough playoff clash with Roma, thanks to the Italians losing their head in the home leg of the tie, but they only managed a draw at home to Copenhagen in their opener and lost 1-0 when they visited Leicester.
Overall they have won four, drawn two, and lost one of their last seven games in all competitions and find themselves vying for the top spot in the Primeira Liga. They also beat Gafanha 3-0 in the Taca de Portugal on Saturday and afforded a rest to some of their players in the process.
The visitors will feel comfortable about getting a positive result against the out of form Belgians. Club Brugge have looked completely out of their depth in the Champions League this season and their injury problems have only got worse since that 4-0 thrashing at Copenhagen. Backing a Porto Win at 5/6 looks a very good value bet considering they have lost three of their last four home games in the Champions League, and I’m also going for a 2-0 correct score prediction at 15/2.
